Who we are & why
I figured if you are planning to have a midwife (maybe me) along for the ride then the least I can do is tell you a little about myself.
…….
This is me, Helen.
I like change, unpredictability, I thrive having lots on my plate. I am obsessed with my horses and whatever current obsession I’m into that month. I live for a challenge. I’m very honest and can be known to put my foot in it. I can talk alot but am able to totally switch that off in the birth space and silently protect your space (if that is your desire).
I set up Soft Steps Midwifery in 2025 after feeling the need to set up more midwifery services for women in The Great Southern.
I had 4 of my 5 babies in England and was lucky enough to have a home birth which changed my life! I also had awesome continuity of care from amazing midwives!
I love the midwives who I have worked alongside (especially in Albany) but I feel very strongly that women should be able to choose if they birth at home, a birth centre or in a hospital. I also think that every woman should be able to receive all care during and after her pregnancy in her home town.
So that is what led to the opening of the clinics in Denmark and Mount Barker for women who want to birth in hospital but want to see a midwife in their home town.
This service will of course run alongside the option of home birthing and antenatal / postnatal packages in women’s own homes.
My youngest and I saying goodbye before shift at King Edwards (2021)
This is Sam who will be the 2nd Midwife at the birth. Sam works in Albany and is an amazing midwife who lots of local women would already have been supported by in their labour or postnatal journey.
